“I'm So Lucky”

A student success story from the Literacy Council of Seattle

On sunny days, light pours in through the large windows of the room where Maricela and her tutor, Kyle, study. The room is conveniently located in the affordable housing complex where Maricela lives, and has a table, a white board, and dry-erase markers — the perfect setup for one-on-one English tutoring.

Maricela grew up in Jalisco, Mexico, and her English lessons in school were minimal. When she arrived to the United States with her son in 1992, the language barrier was a constant hurdle for everything she did. Trips to the doctor's office or the grocery store meant struggling to communicate her most basic needs.

Over the years, Maricela took classes at Seattle Community Colleges and participated in Goodwill Job Training and other programs. But it was her work with Kyle through the Literacy Council of Seattle that made a lasting difference. Together they focused on the skills Maricela needed most: irregular verbs, past tense, pronunciation, and writing.

Kyle helped Maricela learn to text and email, opening up new ways for her to communicate with family, friends, and potential employers. For Maricela, these were not just academic exercises — they were tools that gave her greater independence in daily life.

Maricela's goals are practical and deeply personal. She wants to improve her English enough to work in retail and to advocate for her son at school meetings. She wants to feel confident walking into any situation knowing she can express herself clearly.

The relationship between Maricela and Kyle is one of mutual respect and appreciation. Kyle describes Maricela as a dedicated and hardworking student who brings energy and enthusiasm to every session. Maricela, in turn, says she feels lucky to have found a tutor who understands her goals and helps her work toward them step by step.

Stories like Maricela's are at the heart of what the Literacy Council of Seattle does. Every day, volunteer tutors across the city are working with adult learners to build the English skills that open doors — to jobs, to education, and to fuller participation in the community.
